Joe Elberts is a Director in the Business Development group of SunCoke Energy. He joined SunCoke in August 2011 and has more than 10 years of experience in corporate finance and business development, including mergers and acquisitions. In his current role, Mr. Elberts partners with SunCoke’s strategy group and business units to pursue both organic and inorganic growth through M&A, existing customer management and new customer acquisition.
At SunCoke, Mr. Elberts built out the FP&A function upon its spin-off from Sunoco. He acted as the finance lead for SunCoke’s implementation of Cognos BI and TM-1 forecasting platforms. Since moving to business development, he has played key roles in the divestiture of SunCoke’s coal mining business and acquisition of Convent Marine Terminal. In 2016, Mr. Elberts led SunCoke’s Project Management Office (PMO) for its company-wide, $10M cost reduction initiative.
Before joining SunCoke, Mr. Elberts served in the Corporate Finance group at Nalco Company, where he was key in refinancing over $2B of debt. Prior to that, he was an investment banking analyst at Houlihan Lokey where he worked on sell side M&A transactions advising private equity and family owned businesses.
Mr. Elberts earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance and Master of Science of Accountancy from Wake Forest University. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He is a CPA and a CMA.
